Our History

We began in 2000, when a group of people concerned about improving the quality of comprehensive care for girls and boys with congenital heart diseases, led by Dr. Alexis Palacios-Macedo, Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgeon, began a support project for meet the needs of the Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery Program of the National Institute of Pediatrics (INP).

In 2012 ABC Medical Center joined the objective, thus creating the first and only high specialty pediatric heart center in a private hospital in Mexico.

Kardias has worked to design and improve a multisectoral care program that substantially increases the quality of care for pediatric patients with congenital heart disease based on a synergy between the public and private sectors of the health system, taking advantage of the advantages of each.

Throughout these two decades, we have benefited more than 3,500 patients and their families and we continue to work so that children born with a heart defect receive the timely and highly specialized medical care they deserve.

2000

Foundation

Kardias A.C. is founded. by a group of people concerned about improving the quality of comprehensive care for girls and boys with congenital heart diseases, led by Dr. Alexis Palacios-Macedo, Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgeon, with the aim of meeting the needs of the Cardiovascular Surgery Program Pediatric Department of the National Institute of Pediatrics (INP) and it begings the support to strengthen it.

2003

Training and Development Program for Professionals

The Training and Development Program for health professionals who work in the Cardiovascular Surgery Division of the INP begins, in collaboration with the “Heart Center” of Texas Children's Hospital (TCH)

2005

Construction of medical team

The Ministry of Health assigns 40 places to the INP for the Division of Cardiovascular Surgery, thanks to the efforts made by Kardias, A.C. with the Secretary of Health, Julio Frenk Mora. The motivation behind these actions consisted of building a highly specialized and motivated medical team.

2007

Construction of the Intensive Care Unit

The project for the creation and construction of the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit at the INP (ICUU) begins.

2008

The Board of Directors is reformed

The Board of Directors of the organization is reformed, as well as the structure of associates and statutes, bringing in new members to strengthen the fundraising and administration of the association.

2009

Inauguration of a Cardiovascular Care Division

The INP inaugurated a Division of Intensive Pediatric Cardiovascular Care, with six beds and increased the capacity of care. A collaboration agreement was also signed between Kardias and the INP, thus formalizing the relationship between the two institutions.

2010

The Collaborating Physicians Program starts operating.

2011

The spread of the heart disease problems begins

The process of institutionalizing the association begins and a general coordinator is hired. The strategy for the dissemination of the problem of heart disease with authorities and the general public is launched. Negotiations begin for the creation of a Center of High Specialty in Pediatric Cardiovascular Surgery in partnership with the ABC Medical Center

 

2012

First Kardias Race

The First Kardias Race for the Heart of the Children of Mexico is held, which fulfills the dual function of spreading the word about the problem nationwide and raising funds for the association.

The pediatric cardiovascular surgery program begins at the ABC Medical Center with patients from the INP and joint funds from Kardias, Public Insurance and the ABC Medical Center itself, and the cooperative relationship with the TCH is strengthened.

The ICUU of Kardias-ABC center is inaugurated and the first 14 surgeries are carried out on girls and boys from low-income families.

Kardias joined the International Qualitative Improvement Collaborative (IQIC) initiative, a system led by Boston Children's Hospital that manages a database in which hospitals from developing countries on all continents participate.

2013

Certificate of Good Governance and Transparency from the Mexican Center for Philanthropy.

The program receives the Certificate of Good Governance and Transparency from the Mexican Center for Philanthropy. The learning partnership with TCH is expanded by signing an interagency agreement. This technical collaboration allows the continuous and highly specialized training of the multidisciplinary team of health professionals.

2014

Collaboration agreement of the network of hospitals of the Secretariat of Health of Mexico City

Dr. Alexis Palacios-Macedo receives the “Texas Children's International Recognition Award”, an important recognition for a doctor who makes significant contributions to pediatrics and generates a remarkable impact to improve medical care for children with congenital heart disease, to national and international level.

A collaboration agreement is signed with the network of hospitals of the Health Secretary of Mexico City (formerly GDF) for the referral of patients.

2017

New procedures

The program began to perform minimally invasive procedures for coronary heart disease, through the introduction of catheterization, the laboratory, and the division of interventional cardiology.

2018

Telemedicine

Telemedicine sessions were implemented at INP as part of the academic collaboration agreement with TCH. The initial objective of Kardias A.C. is materialized. At the start of the design and construction stage of the ABC-Kardias Pediatric Heart Center on the Observatory Campus of the ABC Medical Center.

2019

The Pediatric Heart Center is inaugurated.
